Delegates at General Conference Pass Revised Social Principles on Human Rights
The vote count was 671 to 57, passing with 92%.
On Saturday, April 27th, General Conference delegates passed a batch of Revised Social Principles addressing “Church and Governments” and “Basic Rights and Freedoms” on the consent calendar. The vote count was 671 to 57, passing with 92%.
The legislation replaces the Social Principles paragraphs 164 and 165 of the Book of Discipline (read revised paragraphs here).
The legislative committee Church and Society 3 passed this group of petitions unanimously and sent the legislation on to the full plenary making the consent calendar without any changes to what GBCS submitted.
Consent calendar is a way General Conference delegates can vote on petitions in bulk and must receive overwhelming support in their legislative committee and have no financial or constitutional implications.

More revised Social Principles, including ones dealing with the church’s teachings on creation care, economic justice, human sexuality and marriage, will be coming before General Conference delegates for a vote this week.
