The Department of Homeland Securities have dramatically expanded the programs, Secure Communities and 287g. In these programs, DHS recruits local law enforcement to act as federal immigration agents. These programs have resulted in hundreds of thousands of detentions and deportations. These programs also dramatically lessen the trust among immigrant communities in local law enforcement and there is little to no oversight once local law enforcement is trained.

Congress is trying to cut Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits to fund Child Nutrition assistance programs. Take action now to tell Congress that funding improvements to one low-income program by cutting another that serves many of the same families is counterproductive and unacceptable.

The National Criminal Justice Commission Act of 2009 will create a commission charged to undertaking an in-depth review of our entire criminal justice system. The commission will propose wide ranging reforms designed to reduce the incarceration rate, improve federal and local responses to gang violence, restructure our approach to drug policy, improve the treatment of mental illness, improve prison administration, and establish a system for reintegrating ex-offenders.
