DC Residents Deserve Federal Voting Rights

Residents of Washington, D.C. are currently denied the basic right to full representation in both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. While these citizens pay some of the highest taxes in the country and serve in the military, they are not allotted a single vote in Congress!

In September 2007 the Senate fell just 3 votes short of passing historic legislation to provide citizens of the District of Columbia with a permanent voting representative in the House of Representatives. By expanding size of the House of Representatives to 437, the bill would grant a seat to both DC and to the state of Utah, which came up just short of an additional seat in the 2000 census. This vote-neutral, bi-partisan compromise crafted by Representative Tom Davis (R-VA) and Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) passed the U.S. House of Representatives by a vote of 241-177 on April 19, 2007. Unfortunately, the Senate did not vote on the bill.

With a new Congress, the bill has been reintroduced in both houses for consideration. We need to rebuild support to ensure its passage. Now is the time to speak up and correct this historical injustice by granting the District of Columbia a voting seat in the United States House of Representatives!
