Give the members of your community a fair hearing, and judge rightly between one person and another, whether citizen or resident alien. You must not be partial in judging: hear out the small and great alike; you shall not be intimidated, for the judgment is God's
Deuteronomy 1:16-17, NRSV

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.
Luke 4.18-19, NRSV

O you who believe! stand out firmly for Allah, as witnesses to fair dealing, and let not the hatred of others to you make you swerve to wrong and depart from justice. Be just: that is next to piety: and fear Allah. For Allah is well- acquainted with all that you do.

"As people of faith undeterred, we recommit to strengthening our call for critical and swift action to address the brokenness of our criminal justice system." Laura Markle Downton

Criminal justice reform campaign (June 14, 2011)
Clergy leaders from across the country come to Washington, DC to advocate for passage of NCJCA.

Background on the National Criminal Justice Commission Act of 2011, S. 306

Senator Jim Webb (D-VA) has again introduced the National Criminal Justice Commission Act, S. 306, legislation that would create a bipartisan Commission to review and identify effective criminal justice policies and make recommendations for reform. Last year the legislation came very close to passage after having passed the House of Representatives and the Senate’s Judiciary Committee. As people of faith concerned about a failed criminal justice system incarcerating over 2.3 million people, we call for passage of this legislation to begin addressing the injustices impacting our communities.

Benefits of the Criminal Justice Commission include:

  • a transparent and bipartisan Commission to review and identify effective criminal justice policies to increase public safety
  • common sense alternatives to increasingly long prison sentences which, over the past twenty years, have stretched the system beyond its sustainable limits
