LAKE JUNALUSKA, N.C. — “People of Faith Building Partnerships for Peace” is the theme of the peace conference Sunday through Tuesday, Sept. 20-22, at Lake Junaluska Conference & Retreat Center. Speakers will include representatives of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Workshops will focus on the practice of peace-making, especially for advocacy in local communities.

Purpose of the conference is to foster deeper dialogue among persons of the three Abrahamic faiths to find better ways to advocate for peace, security and dignity of all people.

Speakers will include representatives of Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

Featured speakers are the following:

  • Father Elias Chacour, Archbishop of the Galilee, a mostly Palestinian region within Israel. He received the World Methodist Peace Award in 1994 and has been nominated three times for the Nobel Peace Prize.
  • Dr. Sayyid Syeed, national director for Interfaith and Community Alliances for the Islamic Society of North America. The Catholic Heritage Foundation presented him with its Lifetime Achievement Award for distinguished service in furthering the Islamic tradition and for promoting interreligious understanding and harmony.
  • Rabbi Arthur Waskow, founder and director of the Shalom Institute. In 2007, Newsweek named him one of the 50 most influential American rabbis.
  • Dr.Lisa Schirch, professor of Peace Studies at Eastern Mennonite University. She has been involved in conflict prevention, stabilization and peace-building activities throughout the United States, Latin America, Africa, Asia and Europe.
  • The conference is intended to celebrate the common heritage of the three Abrahamic religions; examine what each faith brings to the unified search for peace; and explore ways to be more effective “Peace Builders” in our local communities.

After Schirch’s presentation, conference participants will divide into 20 or more dialogue groups. The groups will focus on the practice of peace-making with the intent of equipping participants to be more involved and effective in peace making in their home communities. Each group will be facilitated by persons trained by Schirch.

Several peace groups will provide displays providing information on their programs.

The United Methodist General Board of Church & Society is a sponsor of the peace conference.

Other sponsors include Gammon Theological Seminary, Duke Divinity School, World Methodist Council, Southeastern Jurisdiction College of Bishops and Candler School of Theology, Emory University.
