Abolishing Poverty in Appalachia
Sept. 11, 12 in Kingsport, Tenn.
KINGSPOT, Tenn. — “Abolishing Poverty in Appalachia: The Church’s Response to God’s Call” will be held Friday and Saturday, Sept. 11 and 12, at First Broad Street United Methodist Church here. Goal of the event is for participants to leave with a plan and commitment to engage in abolishing poverty. The event will equip participants to engage in lifestyles and solutions that will eliminate poverty with our neighbors.
Leaders for the event include two United Methodist bishops: James Swanson, resident bishop of Holston Conference, and Hope Morgan Ward, resident bishop of Mississippi Conference.
John Hill, director of the Economic and Environmental Justice at the United Methodist General Board of Church & Society, will also participate.

Steve Hodges, director of Jubilee Project in Sneedville, Tenn.
Joel Trigg, director of Hope Haven Ministries
Tim Carter, director of Interfaith Hospitality Network
Anissa Lyttle, director of Family Resources Center, Kingsport City Schools
Michele Wilder, homeless education coordinator of Kingsport City Schools
Members of First Broad Street UMC will also lead sessions. They are the Rev. A. Clark Jenkins, senior pastor; the Rev Andrew Amodei, associate pastor; and Danny Howe, director of missions.
The event will begin at noon Friday and will conclude with worship at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
Cost to attend is $18 if registered by Aug. 31, $20 thereafter. Registration fee includes Friday supper, Saturday breakfast and lunch. Limited scholarships are available upon request.
