United Methodist Seminars"What does the Lord require of you but to do justice and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God?" Micah 6:8

WHAT

Young People at a UM Seminar

Our seminars are educational, interactive, thought-provoking, and fun. You pick the topic and we'll design a seminar to answer questions, challenge assumptions, and open up the group to reflection. Some topics include hunger, immigration, peace, racism, and healthcare. Seminar length varies from two to four days, and the cost is $12 per person per day.

WHY

To learn, reflect and to be inspired with those working for justice locally, nationally, and globally!

WHO

Everyone is welcome to the seminar program! Groups can be United Methodist or ecumenical. Seminars are great for any age group, from youth to senior citizens.

WHERE

Seminars take place at our offices in the United Methodist Building on Capitol Hill, adjacent to the Supreme Court and the U.S. Capitol. The seminar agenda generally includes "field trips" to places that connect participants to the seminar topic.

WHEN

We conduct seminars year-round. For young people, the most popular times are during breaks or in the summer but we welcome groups at any time they can come.

Contact Forms and Frequently Asked Questions

  • Who attends seminars?
The Seminar Program is open to everyone -- United Methodists and non-United Methodists -- high school age and older. United Methodist Women are ardent supporters and longtime participants. The Seminar Program works hard to ensure racial/ethnic and gender diversity among resource people and seminar speakers.
  • Who arranges the seminars?
A full-time seminar designer works closely with group leadership to prepare seminars to meet the specific interests of each group. A seminar can be scheduled by contacting either seminar office. The seminar staff is happy to provide suggestions for lodging, meals and recreation.
  • Where do the seminars take place?
Our UM locations are unbeatable in providing access to national and international policy makers. Situated on Capitol Hill, the United Methodist Building is next door neighbor to the U.S. Capitol and the Supreme Court. Directly across the street from the United Nations headquarters in mid-town Manhattan sits the 12-story Church Center for the United Nations. Additionally, the dynamic work of faith-based and secular grassroots organizations in both NYC and D.C. give participants a unique view on contemporary social issues. Seminar groups have the opportunity to visit and learn within local communities.
  • How much does a seminar cost?
The cost of a seminar is $12 per person per day in Washington D.C. and $10.00 per person per day in New York. The minimum group size is 20 participants.
The D.C. office has funds available for UMC-related groups to support participants for whom the cost of the seminar prohibits participation. Funds available must be used to cover the registration costs and will not be available for travel and lodging.
