Prophet Driven Economy

Today is the day
God cries with the masses of starving people,
Despises growing disparity between rich and poor,
Demands justice for workers in the marketplaces
And so we shall we.

Today, the storms of economic distress are battering our lives and the lives of our brothers and sisters around the world and flooding our congregations and communities with anxiety, anger and fear.

Many of our communities were suffering on the economic margins and struggling in the shadow of prosperity long before the market turmoil came to dominate the news. For others, the recession is triggering a new sense of economic uncertainty and stirring profound questions over the meaning of work and wealth, of community and security, and of prosperity and sustainability.

In the midst of this turmoil, we gather as members of a global church to worship, share, study and act.

Grounded in the Holy Scriptures, we reflect on the social teachings of The United Methodist Church and grieve our failure to give full life to these powerful words.

Sharing stories from across the connection we gain a sense that the problems facing God?s children around the world are bigger than any of our individual struggles and yet celebrate the vast and too often untapped reservoirs of hope that exist to sustain and transform us.

We acknowledge the very real pain and fear that exists but refuse to be controlled by it. We repent that for too long we have been blinded by our own anxieties and captive to our narrow self interest and greed and we reject false notions of scarcity choosing instead to embrace God?s divine economy of abundance.

We rejoice that our story as Christians does not end on Good Friday. We are a resurrection people. A community called to proclaim- even in the midst of darkness- the power and possibility of Christ?s redeeming love.

Today we embrace our call to make disciples of Christ for the transformation of the world. We embrace this moment when the people called United Methodists can offer to the world not just words of assurance but acts of hope and justice.

Today is the day
God brings good news to the poor,
Proclaims release to the captives
Gives sight to the blind
And sets the oppressed free.
And so shall we.
