Caring for God's Good Creation

As people of faith, called to care for God’s good creation, we grieve the devastation caused by the ongoing disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. While communities across the Gulf region struggle to respond to the unfolding impacts on their ecosystems and economies, we call on our elected leaders to provide a swift and coordinated response to meet both immediate needs and to lay the groundwork for a sustainable future.

Echoing the call of many faith leaders, we ask that the comprehensive response uphold the following principles:

  • Work with stakeholders
  • Hold responsible parties accountable
  • Ensure that help reaches those in need
  • Commit to a long-term recovery
  • Take steps to prevent future disasters
  • Respond to emerging and yet-unknown needs

This is no time for partisan politics or personal agendas, but rather a time for moral leadership. We pray that the bonds connecting us to one another and to all Creation – sadly strained by this disaster – can be rewoven and strengthened through our collective response.
